The IEEE
A non-profit organization, IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology.
There are more than 365,000 IEEE members in over 150 countries around the world. IEEE members are engineers, scientists and allied professionals whose technical interests are rooted in electrical and computer sciences, engineering and related disciplines.
Through its global membership, IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics among others.
Pre-University Education
The IEEE is committed to providing quality educational resources for educators, parents, students, IEEE volunteers, and the public.

Organization of IEEE
IEEE is organized into:
- 324 local sections in ten geographic regions;
- 1,784 chapters comprised of local members with similar technical interests;
- 38 technical societies and seven technical councils;
- 1,616 student branches at colleges and universities in 80 countries;
- 452 student branch chapters.
Activities take place on a local level through the development and maintenance of geographical organizational units: Regions, Sections, Technical Chapters, Affinity Groups and Student Branches.
Members of the IEEE automatically become members of their local IEEE Section, allowing them to share technical, professional and personal interests with others in IEEE's worldwide member community.
IEEE Region 3
IEEE Region 3, one of ten IEEE geographic regions worldwide encompasses the southeastern United States and and the island country of Jamaica.
IEEE Region 3 is organized into nine geographical Areas, which include 42 local sections with their associated subsections, technical chapters, affinity groups, and university student branches.
IEEE Richmond Section
One of 324 IEEE sections worldwide, the Richmond Section encompasses 26 counties and six independent cities of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Pre-university Technical Education and Career Preparation
Pre-university education and career preparation in the STEM areas have long been an important emphasis of the IEEE Richmond Section. Indeed, IEEE Richmond Section and its members have been leaders in this area, with participation in varied activities, including:
- The Children's Engineering Convention;
- IEEE Teacher in Service Program;
- Career days;
- Science fairs;
- Robotics competitions;
